A real scare on Presque Isle Bay Saturday afternoon, as a 28-foot cabin cruiser taking on water, sank, with six people on board.

It happened about 100 yards off Bay Harbor Marina just before 2:00 p.m. Other boaters and folks on shore looked on as the cabin cruiser went down, leaving just a bit of the bow peaking out of the water.

The boater who was in trouble, called the coast guard. They responded and were able to get all six people on board their boat.  They took them to shore at Wolverine Marina. Sources tell us one woman was transported to the hospital. According to officials at Lakeshore Towing, one woman on board was nearly trapped, as the boat was going under.

Lakeshore Towing pulled the boat into Perry's Landing Marina, still underwater.  It will have to be lifted with a crane on Monday.  Both the Coast Guard and the towing company say it is very unusual for a large boat to sink so quickly and completely.  Lakeshore officials say the boater apparently hit a wake from another boat, heard a boom, then one engine cut off, and the cabin cruiser quickly sank.
