In Downtown Erie, it's an end of an era for rock music.

Sherlock’s and Park Place, which served as popular music venue for local musicians, has closed its doors.

"It was news you didn't want to hear,” said The Hangover vocalist and guitar player Christopher Shaner.  “I'm kind of saddened by it.  I don't know how to live without it, quite frankly."

Shaner unknowingly played the bar's last concert, on August 18.

"So many of my experiences as an adult were tied to that venue, seeing bands perform, performing in bands, so it's tough to see it go,” said Shaner.  “I don't know what could possibly replace it."

Shaner recently received a phone call, letting him know that all of the upcoming gigs he had booked, had been canceled.

Never Enough and Rock Scars vocalist Jeffrey Crock says news of the bar's closure, came without warning.

“It’s an end of an era,” said Crock.  “All over.”

Crock has been performing at Sherlock's, since 1983.

"It's definitely been a staple for music,” said Crock.  “There was always different genres of music every night. Modern music Mondays…Wednesday new wave, hard rock Thursdays, so it's definitely going to affect the community for the social music scene."

As the building’s future remains uncertain, both Shaner and Crock hope for a similar outcome.

“Truthfully, I want to see another rock club,” said Crock.  “I'd like to see another.  Erie wants to see something downtown for rock and roll."

Erie native and Train frontman Pat Monahan use to perform at Sherlock’s during the early stages of his career.

Monahan sent Erie News Now the following statement:

“Sherlock’s and Park Place we’re staples for me and for every Erie musician and live music fan. Knowing that it won’t be there any longer makes me sad for future Erie breakout artists. Times change and I’ve always understood and appreciated that but this one stings. I’m glad I was able to have those great experiences there and I’m very grateful for the great memories!” - Pat Monahan, Train

Phone calls to Sherlock’s for comment were not returned.
