Local students are hoisting up the sails, and setting off on Lake Erie.

Erie Public School students in grades five and eight are participating in day sails during the month of September.

In partnership with the Flagship Niagara League, they'll be sailing on the Niagara and the Lettie G. Howard.

Not only are the kids getting a chance to get out of the classroom, they're learning first hand lessons about the lake, and these historic vessels.

"They're going to be the ones setting sail, so they have to physically haul them up. So, they've got to pull their weight, literally, " said Katelinn Shaw of the Lettie G. "That is one of the reasons why the ships are such a good learning platform because they really do have to participate."

The Lettie G. Howard has been around for 125 years.
