Winter Accessibility for People with Disabilities
During the winter months many people take for granted the ability to get through piles of snow and ice, but for others in our community, it can be a daily struggle.
"For people with disabilities the winter weather presents a lot of challenges, first just simply navigating getting in and out of your car in public places," Shona Eakin, chief executive officer of Voices for Independence said.
Often when snow is plowed, it can pile up on sidewalks, requiring someone to pack the snow down or move it out the way.
Even a few days after the most recent snowfall, some pathways still can’t be navigated safely, creating a dangerous situation. When sidewalks are cleaned, other areas such as parking lots, and handicap spots are often not.
"When you use a wheelchair you have to function in all types of environments, we do rely on business, community, our neighbors, so that we can be independent and continue living our daily lives," Eakin said.
