The coroner has released the name of the man whose body was found at an apartment complex in Crawford County after a massive fire early Friday morning.

Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell told Erie News Now that John C. Borkovec, 69, died from asphyxiation from smoke inhalation and suffered multiple thermal burns. His death has been ruled as accidental. There will not be an autopsy.

Borkovec was discovered just before noon Friday as crews were working to tear down the back of the building.

The fire was first reported around 1 a.m. Friday at an apartment building along Terrace St. in Meadville near the intersection with Locust St.

Multiple crews from the area responded to fire, which took several hours to contain.

They rescued several residents from the building. Using ground ladders they saved residents from the roofs of the front and back porch. The other residents escaped through the stairways and doors.

The old mansion, built in 1864, was converted into 13 apartment units. The Meadville fire chief told Erie News Now the building is a complete loss.

There were smoke detectors in the building, and it recently received a HUD inspection, according to the owner.

The displaced residents were taken to the CHAPS building on Liberty St. to meet with the Red Cross. From there, many were given vouchers to stay at hotels over the weekend. Others are staying with family or friends. CHAPS is currently working to find displaced residents sustainable, permanent housing.

There's no word on what started the fire. The fire chief said determining a cause could be difficult because of the fire's destruction.
