Federal mediators have reached out to picketing members of UE Locals 506 and 618 of the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America.  The union members began walking a picket line Tuesday after negotiations with Wabtec broke down.  The union is saying the company is being locked out by Wabtec.  The company considers it a walkout.

According to Scott Slawson, President of UE Local 506, federal mediators reached out to the union this morning.  Discussions on mediation are taking place today, and a decision to enter mediation could be announced as soon as tomorrow morning.

Wabtec merged with GE transportation.  The merger took effect on Monday. The unions wanted to continue working under terms of their contract with GE for at 30 days while negotiations for a new a new contract with Wabtec were continuing.   Wabtec wants the workers to accept terms of a contract that would include lower pay for new employees, and the possibility of mandatory overtime.
