More Opposition to Plan to Cut Great Lakes Cleanup Program
More opposition today to the Trump administration plan to drastically cut funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf now joining Congressman Mike Kelly and others in opposing the cuts.
The program has pumped about $12 million in federal funding into Erie County since it began in 2010.
The money going to programs to cleanup Lake Erie, tributary creeks and Presque Isle Bay.
Key programs including limiting storm water and sediment runoff and fighting to prevent invasive species from harming valuable local fish.
Two previous efforts at chopping the program failed.
Local supporters are working to make that happen again.
Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper said,"Those who are on the Great Lakes have built up a very strong defense against these kind of cuts by binding together in a bi-partisan way to make sure this kind of funding stays."
Much of the federal money is actually used to pay for programs run by Erie County government.
