A Chautauqua County Grand Jury has indicted a man on murder and manslaughter charges for his role in the 2014 death of a 16 month old in Jamestown, N.Y.

Tyler A. Perez, 35, was arrested Friday in the 400 block of Willard St. in the City of Jamestown on a warrant and arraigned Monday morning on the charges.

Investigators said he played a role in the April 17, 2014 death of 16-month-old Nayla Hodnett.

The child was found beaten to death at her home, "Our goal is to investigate cases and come to the truth, and hopefully we can make an arrest upon the conclusion," said Jamestown Police Chief Harry Snellings. "I don't know how this replaces a 16-month child, but hopefully it brings some kind of closure to the family," Snellings continued.

Nayla Hodnett died of blunt force trauma. Perez, who was the boyfriend of the child's mother at the time, was a person of interest from the start, but investigators just now had enough to take the case to a grand jury.

Investigators aren't saying what new evidence led to the charges against Perez, nearly five years after the murder, but they do say they investigators never gave up the case and they're  pleased they were able to finally make an arrest, "There's no statue of limitation on murder, anytime we get any new type of evidence related to a case, we always try to follow up, and you never know when a case is going to break," said Snellings. "Just because you're not hearing things in the media, doesn't mean we're not continuing our investigations, that we're not looking into the cases, the police aren't always the decision makers as to when cases go forward and when cases get prosecuted," Snellings said.

Perez is behind bars in the Chautauqua County Jail on $500,000 cash or $1 million property bond.
