Most people understand that being a teacher isn't always an easy job, but one local educator is going above and beyond inside her classroom.

The McDowell Intermediate High School teacher is battling throat cancer for the 4th time and is in the running for a free cruise.

Ashley Kuzma is a gifted support teacher and is currently in 5th place for the free cruise. The top 30 teachers will get to go on a cruise to Alaska.

Ashley tells Erie News Now it's all a good distraction and says her battle hasn't been easy but she's living everyday to the fullest.

She was nominated to the cruise contest by one of her friends who says, "I do not know anyone more deserving".

Ashley has continued to teach during her latest cancer fight and has to use a prosthesis covering the permanent opening in her neck so she can talk, since getting her voice box removed last year.

Kuzma tells us she is happy her story is getting out now, it happens to be national oral, head, and neck cancer awareness month, and she encourages anyone with strange symptoms to go see their doctor.

She says she's getting through this latest battle with the support from family, friends, and co-workers.

You can help Ashley win that free cruise by voting for her at nclgivingjoy.com. The contest ends this Friday, April 12th.

Ashley also has the chance to win 1 of 3 grand prizes of either $25,000 , $15,000 , or $10,000 for her school.
