Roar on the Shore is moving to Lake Erie Speedway after a dispute between the City of Erie and organizers over the costs of the motorcycle rally.

Erie City Council President Jim Winarski said there have been ongoing discussions about recouping money to help cover police protection and other fees incurred by the event. The issue was first brought to his attention about a month ago, he said.

According to Erie Mayor Joe Schember, last year's expenses reached roughly $129,000. which Schember said forced the city, and event organizers to talk re-payment.

Schember, says the city wanted 50 percent of its costs back from last year, while organizers offered a third.

And after the city requested 100% percent of future costs, the talks broke down,  and so did the chance of having roar run through the city.

"I'm sorry to lose them from Erie, but I'm happy that they found a good location." Schember said "My interest is protecting the citizens of Erie, the taxpayers here in Erie."

The motorcycle rally will take care of security and staffing, and some other events have been pushed back to accommodate Roar on the Shore, Moore said.

2019 marks the 13th year for the event, which has been held in downtown Erie since it started.

Lake Erie Speedway Operations Manager AJ Moore said they have been in talks with Roar on the Shore organizers for a while, and the logistics are still being worked out.

"We're pretty confident that it'll be a great host for the roar." Moore said

According to Schember, future expenses may keep organizers from holding the event in the City of Erie for the foreseeable future.

Roar on the Shore runs July 17 - 21. During its existence, the event has raised about $920,000 for charitable organizations, according to organizers. This year's proceeds will benefit National Alliance on Mental Illness of Erie County’s (NAMI) Homefront program. NAMI has declined to comment on the change of venue.

Kim Coates, who famously played Tig Trager on FX's hit show "Sons of Anarchy," will serve as grand marshal of this year's Bringin' in the Roar Bike Parade.
