Mother's Day was also graduation day for Mercyhurst University students.

There were plenty of proud moms and families looking on as students received their diplomas Sunday.

Mercyhurst awarded 675 degrees - 534 bachelor's degrees and 141 master's degrees.

The Mercyhurst graduates have learned many lessons in their classes leading up to graduation, but the one they say they will never forget is carpe diem, which means seize the day.

The university honors one student who embodies that motto each year at graduation.

This year's student - Vincent Marrazzo - graduated Summa Cum Laude as an honors student with three majors.

He was highly involved on campus, even serving as undergraduate student government president.

"It means the world to me," said Marrazzo. "I just absolutely love Mercyhurst and everything it does for its students and giving back to the community. I just feel honored to be awarded this, and I just hope to give back to the university that's given so much to me."

177 students earning associate's degrees graduated from Mercyhurst North East on Saturday.
