Well-Known Vocalist Sentenced to Probation in Visa Fraud Case
A former Mercyhurst University employee who admitted to visa fraud charges will not spend any time behind bars.
Daniel Cabanillas was sentenced Monday to two years probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
Cabanillas is a well-known vocalist who has performed many times in the Erie community.
In 2017, a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of visa fraud.
The investigation started after Mercyhurst fired him for the unauthorized use of a school credit card. Prosecutors said that led to the discovery that Cabanillas had used an automatic signature device to falsify a school official's signature.
He now works for Gannon University.
