Erie Mayor Applauds City Council for Conversion Therapy Ban
City of Erie Mayor Joe Schember is applauding City Council members for approving a ban on conversion therapy.
Erie City Council passed an ordinance Wednesday that prohibits mental health practitioners from conducting conversion therapy on a minor.
The practice attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of members within the LGBTQ community.
Mayor Schember said the ban ensure equality and acceptance of everyone in the community.
"I don't want anyone in our community to feel outcast, regardless of the color of their skin, their religion, or ethnic heritage, or their sexual preference," said Schember. "The conversion therapy ban is a step in the right direction."
Erie joins a list of many other cities in 19 states that have banned conversion therapy.
