The Penn State-Behrend supermileage team captured the SAE International Challenge today, stretching 2,419 miles out of single gallon of gasoline.

The Behrend team also won the event in 2018 and finished second in 2016 and 2017.

The teams build lightweight, carbon-fiber, single occupant vehicles, which travel on a looped test track in Michigan. They use a "burn-and-coast" method, firing the engine to set speed.

This is an international competition. The teams are judged on their vehicle's MPG and the scores from a design review.
