A replica of the ship sailed by Christopher Columbus in 1492 is coming to Erie for Tall Ships 2019.

The historic NAO SANTA MARIA will be docked at Dobbins Landing after the Parade of Sail.

The ship will travel from the province of Huelva of southern Spain. The SANTA MARIA will bring 17 crew members and hail the Spanish flag.

It has three masts, is almost 100 feet long and weighs almost 200 tons.

The ship was one of three to set sail toward the edge of the earth in 1492. After discovering the new world, the SANTA MARIA was run aground and destroyed while sailing near Española Island.

Tall Ships Erie runs Aug. 22-25, 2019.
