Erie News Now has learned a Gannon University sorority has been temporarily suspended for an alcohol violation.

After a Facebook post claimed The Epsilon Delta Chapter of Tri Sigma had been "suspended for its third time in four years" we made a call to the university for clarification.

We were then told the chapter was in fact handed down a one-semester suspension by the sorority's National Board in January, though it was only its first suspension.

The chapter will be allowed to resume operations in the fall, but the sorority will be required to hold all activities on campus.

The Tri Sigma chapter had operated at 502 W. 6 St. We're told it is not a Gannon property, but it will continue to be used for student housing.

The university said the sorority had previous National Board alcohol and hazing violations, but they were not the reason for the suspension. The dates and disciplinary actions for those violations were not specified.

Gannon and the National Board have worked with the sorority since the violation.

The university told Erie News Now it is committed to making sure its students are safe.

We spoke with two sorority members still living in the home, and they declined to comment. We made a call to the national board, and they were unable to provide a full statement,  but did say they work with universities on discipline.
