Erie Coke Environmental Director Cites Progress Made Towards Reaching Compliance
A hearing continues this Monday, to determine if Erie Coke can remain open after numerous air pollution violations.
This is the fourth day of testimony, with Erie Coke's Environmental Director, Ed Nesselbeck taking the stand. He testified that the company has been making a tremendous amount of progress in reaching environmental compliance since he was hired last February.
He said the company is turning over a new leaf with the hiring of many new managers and directors. Nesselbeck said the managers instituted a daily walk around at the plant to look for potential leaks and fugitive emission. he also testified that Erie Coke has been in air quality compliance over 99 percent of the time in April, May and June of this year but he said he cannot see any industry being in compliance with environmental rules 100 percent of the time. Nesselbeck is the last witness for Erie Coke.
As we reported, Erie Coke made a $3.1 million dollar offer to the DEP this month. The news came last week at the hearing and Erie Coke leaders say that amount will help bring the plant into compliance.
