The future of the Erie Coke plant is still uncertain tonight.

Company representatives met today for five hours with officials of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  No agreement could be reached on how to solve air pollution problems at the plant.

The DEP, on July 1, denied Erie Coke's request to renew its operating permit after numerous pollution violations.  Erie Coke is asking that the plant stay open while it appeals the denial of the permit.    A hearing lasting six days took place last month before the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board.    A judge still has not ruled in the matter.

Erie Coke issued a counteroffer to the DEP last week and that same judge brought both sides to the table today to see if a settlement can be worked out.

According to Erie Coke Attorney Paul Stockman, negotiations will continue sometime in the future. A date has not been set.
