With school inching closer by the day, several community groups partnered to make sure area kids were ready. The Michael Making Lives Better organized the event that welcomed hundreds of students.

Founder Michael Hooks recalled disadvantages he faced growing up, and wanted to help other kids who may be in similar situations. This is the 14th year the organization has held the event.

MMLB brought in barbers and beauticians from around the city to make sure the kids were first day fresh. They also gave out backpacks, with free books from Kiwanis to stuff inside. The day included horse and pony riding, a gaming truck, food, play houses, rock climbing and more.

The group is also hosting a 5k Run Walk at Diehl Elementary School on September 7th to raise money for a kitchen that would serve lunches to kids on the weekend throughout the school year. For more infomation about it, you can visit michaelmakinglivesbetter.org/5krunwalk.
