Pennsylvania's Public Utility Commission (PUC) is starting a series of events to promote consumer awareness.

It hosted the first of eight statewide events Friday at the Ambassador Conference Center.

Be Utility Wise brings together community service agencies to share tools and resources to better serve the community.

The annual program is free to these agencies.

It featured presentations from state agencies and local utility companies.

"The importance of this today is to understand what programs are out there before the snow starts to fly and getting the help early to ensure that these people can be as protected as possible going into the winter season," said Andrew Place, Pennsylvania Public Utility Commissioner.

The PUC said more than a thousand professionals attended these events statewide last year.
