Back to School Sicknesses Start to Peak
Back to school season brings children back together and can increase their chances of getting sick.
Erie News Now spoke with a local pediatrician about the most common illnesses her office sees at back to school time. Dr. Susan Moore with Allegheny Health Network said she mostly sees viral illnesses this time of year, roughly one month after school begins.
Those include the common cold, stomach flu and strep throat. Dr. Moore pointed out viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics, but rather should be allowed to run their course.
If taking care of a sick child, Dr. Moore suggests making them as comfortable as possible until the virus passes. This includes giving them over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen or Tylenol, popsicles, applesauce, or other foods that are easy to get down, but can help keep them hydrated too.
