For the first-half Mercyhurst had the plan laid out for an upset of 21st ranked IUP. However, a 28-point performance by the Crimson Hawks in the second half helped the visitors leave Saxson Stadium with a 56-24 win.

Despite trailing 21-7 early, Mercyhurst mounted a comeback and took its only lead of the game midway through the second quarter. Doug Altavilla found Jason Armstrong for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Lakers ahead 24-21.

However, Mercyhurst was unable to match up with IUP sophomore receiver Duane Brown. The IUP wideout reeled in three touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner that put the Crimson Hawks ahead 28-24 heading into the half.

Brown added his third score of the afternoon to expand the IUP lead to 11 to start the third quarter of play. The Crimson Hawks totaled up 35 unanswered points after Mercyhurst took the lead to improve to 4-0 on the season.

IUP quarterback Quinton Maxwell threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns.

Mercyhurst quarterback Doug Altavilla nearly matched Maxwell with three touchdowns of his own. The fourth-year starter, however, threw two interceptions and was replaced in the second half by freshman Michael Lowery.

Mercyhurst drops to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in PSAC West action. They will welcome in Slippery Rock next weekend to Saxson Stadium for a noon kickoff.
