State police in Corry are investigating an accidental shooting on Wilson Road in Sugar Grove Boro, Warren County.

It happened on the afternoon of September 21, but investigators are just releasing the information.

They say a 55-year-old man was shooting a muzzleloader, when the firearm exploded due to an excessive amount of gun powder.

The victim was transported to Corry Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released later that day.

A muzzleloader is any firearm into which the projectile, and the propellant charge are loaded from the muzzle or open end of the gun barrel, unlike modern breech-loading firearms.

The muzzleloading rifle is the oldest form of firearm, dating back to the 16th or 17th century.  According to online sources, there has been a resurgence of interest in muzzleloaders over the last 25 years.
