On the heels of August's day care fire that took the lives of five children, Erie City Council is set to take a look at the effort to prevent any similar tragedy in the future.

The fatal fire at the Harris Family Daycare on W. 11th St. led to questions about smoke detectors in day cares. Inspectors said the facility only had one in the attic on the night of the fire.

Erie City Council has a scheduled study session Thursday on a proposed, new ordinance aimed at improving safety at Erie day cares.

Members will hear from the city's fire chief and code enforcement manager.

The new ordinance would require all day cares in the city, even older ones grandfathered in under old laws, to register and go through annual inspections.
