The man convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend and injuring another at an Erie restaurant will spend life prison without the possibility of parole.

In addition to the mandatory life sentence, Luis Rodriguez, 49, was also sentenced Tuesday morning to an additional 20 to 40 years for the attempted homicide of another worker.

Rodriguez read a statement apologizing to the victim's family during the sentencing hearing.

A jury convicted Rodriguez on all counts including first-degree murder. He was also found guilty of attempted homicide; two counts of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person; possession of an instrument of crime; and firearms not to be carried without a license.

The homicide happened at the Pizza Hut at E. 38th and Zimmerman Rd. in November 2018.

Investigators said he was dating the victim - Alicia Stalheim, 25 - who worked at the restaurant.

Prosecutors called a murder "two minutes of pure terror" during opening statements.

Another employee who worked there - Ashleigh Fuhrman - was also shot. She took the stand as a key witness.

"We don't always have cooperation," said Erin Connelly, prosecutor. "We don't always have an eyewitness, so that was very helpful in this case."

She said Stahlheim returned from a delivery and told her her boyfriend, Rodriguez, was there with a gun, and Fuhrman should call 911.

Fuhrman said she started calling when Rodriguez pointed a gun at her stomach. She told him not to shoot because she was pregnant.

Rodriguez did not shoot her, but Fuhrman said he then went into the kitchen where she believed Stalheim was and fired the gun.

Fuhrman testified she went outside, and Rodriguez shot her in the shoulder. She peaked inside the kitchen, saw Stalheim unresponsive on the floor, left and heard two more gunshots.

She said she went across the street to a store and called 911.

A firearms expert testified the cartridges found at the scene matched the handgun found in the Rodriguez's car during his arrest.

Erie Police Detective Michael Hertel testified about his interrogation of Rodriguez after his arrest. They also played video of the interview.

In it, Rodriguez admits to shooting Stalheim and her co-worker after getting text messages from Stalheim with "LOL." He said she was laughing at him.

At some point, police said Rodriguez told them had been drinking before the shooting, but investigators said they saw no sign he was intoxicated.

Rodriguez said he went to the restaurant to give a debit card to Stalheim, but he never gave it to her.

He also testified he remembers shooting her, but he does not know the details. The defendant said he had the gun on him because he was taking it to try to sell it to someone.

Rodriguez said he was heading to Ohio to ask for his children's forgiveness because he was ashamed of what he was done. He was arrested before making it there four hours after the murder on Interstate 90.

Rodriguez gave all his testimony Wednesday in Spanish with the help of a translator.

After the verdict was read Thursday morning, he showed no emotion in the courtroom or as he was led away by Erie County Sheriff's deputies.
