Hundreds of athletes hit the ice today at the ErieBank Sports Park, but they weren't playing hockey.

Instead, they played broomball, a sport similar to hockey, but played without skates and curved sticks.

Sixteen teams competed in the two-day Mid-Atlantic Broomball Tournament, which used to be held in Pittsburgh before this year's Erie debut.

Players say it's a fun sport, and just about anyone can learn it.

“Came into college. Didn’t know anything about it. Just picked up the broom and been in love with it ever since," said Christian Stole. "It’s a good time, and I recommend everyone do it.”

This year's competition marked the first year the tournament included a women's division.

Five women's team competed.
