Mother of Woman Fatally Stabbed at Millcreek Home Testifies During Murder Trial
The mother of a woman fatally stabbed at a home in Millcreek Township last year took the stand to testify as the murder trial started Monday.
Police arrested and charged James Gilbert, 25, with stabbing and killing his girlfriend - Marinda Matasowski, 20 - in August 2018 at a home along Mill St.
Gilbert has been charged with first-degree murder in Matasowski's death. Both are the parents of a baby.
Matasowski's mother Kim Lobaugh testified she often watched the baby when her daughter worked third shift. She said Matasowski came over to her house with the baby the night of the murder. Lobaugh said Gilbert was also there and wanted to talk.
Lobaugh said she took the baby and later heard her daughter scream. She testified she came downstairs to find her daughter on the ground, and Gilbert stabbing himself.
His lawyer asked the court for mental health evaluations and testing on marijuana Gilbert reportedly smoked before the killing, claiming it may have triggered a psychotic episode.
Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri also showed in court the knife used in the crime. It was apparently a kitchen knife that was brought to the home that night.
