Defendant Takes Stand in Murder Trial for Fatal 2018 Stabbing
The man on trial for the homicide of his girlfriend took the stand for three hours Tuesday.
James Gilbert, 25, is charged with the violent stabbing death of Mindy Matasowski, 20. She was his girlfriend and the mother of his little boy.
The fatal stabbing happened in August 2018 at Matasowski's mom's home on Mill St. in Millcreek. Matasowski brought one-year-old Jason over, so her mom could babysit while she worked third shift.
She said she heard her daughter scream and headed to the family room to find her daughter bleeding on the floor.
Matasowski's mother testified Gilbert said, "I don't know why I did it," then stabbed himself in the chest.
She also told the jury about a deteriorating relationship between Matasowski and Gilbert.
As of early Tuesday afternoon, five more people testified since the victim's mother took the stand Monday.
The prosecution has rested its case. The defense is expected to call a witness to testify Wednesday.
The jury is expected to get the case late Wednesday.
