Veterans Day is still five days away.

But a local club today got an early start in honoring about 100 veterans.

Elks Lodge 67 on Peninsula Drive today hosting it's 6th annual ceremony honoring vets.

They came from the VA Medical Center, Soldiers and Sailors Home and three other area nursing homes.

The Elks raised $2500 through grants and donations to put on a luncheon and bingo, with many community and political leaders stopping by.

Organizers say the event is about honoring the men and women who fought for our freedom.

Al Bossar, Co-Chairman of the Veterans Committee said, "If it was not for these guys we would not have the rights we have now. You can say what you want, do what you want, you can associate with whomever you want. It is a free country that we earned by a lot of blood, sweat by these guys right here."

The Elks Lodge also distributes holiday baskets to some veterans and takes vets to an Erie Seawolves game each year.
