Fire destroyed part of a house in Union City Monday night.

Firefighters said the flames started around 11:30 p.m. at a house on E. High St.

The family living at the address escaped and was waiting outside when help arrived.

For the next several hours, crews fought back the flames.

Union City fire chief Bob Wolf said the main part of the house will be saved, but he says the winter weather made the job more difficult.

"When I came to the call, the roads were snow-covered, slippery," said Wolf. "I'm sure everybody else experienced the same thing I did. So, it takes a little extra time to get where you got to go."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
