Move over.
That's the message from Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT, as they remind drivers of a state law to keep first responders, workers, and drivers safe this winter.

It’s called the Steer Clear Law, requiring drivers to move over for emergency vehicles, traffic stops, or disabled vehicles, “You have to move over into the other lane if they are pulled off with their lights on, if you are unable to move over then you must reduce your speed and do it safely as they pass that vehicle,” said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Cindy Schick.

Erie News Now tagged along for a special detail along Interstate-90 Tuesday afternoon.

State Police pulled over the drivers of several vehicles who disregarded a PennDOT truck, which was on the side of the interstate, “Any vehicles that is pulled over on the side of the road that's doing maintenance, or plow trucks, we want to give them a buffer of safety, because we're concerned for our workers as well while they're out there,” said Joshua Kaufer, Safety Press Officer with PennDOT.

Drivers who police pulled over during the detail on Tuesday were not ticketed, just warned and schooled about the law. But if they were ticketed, they could face minimum fines of $250.

By the way, this law isn't just for driving in Pennsylvania, all fifty states have passed similar driving laws to protect first responders, workers, and drivers.
