A SCI Mercer inmate has been charged with homicide in the death of another inmate.
Darl Heverly, 35, was arraigned on the charge, as well as counts of aggravated assault, assault by prisoner, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person Tuesday morning.
Heverly allegedly used pieces of a torn bed sheet to strangle his cellmate - Jason Kelly, 35 - late Monday night, according to KDKA.
Corrections officers discovered Kelly unconscious in his cell during a routine check of the prison’s restricted housing unit Monday night, according to the facility’s superintendent.
The officers and the prison’s infirmary staff tried to resuscitate him, and he was transferred to the Grove City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Kelly was serving a five- to 10-year sentence for a robbery conviction in Allegheny County. He had been at SCI Mercer since March 2019.
Heverly is reportedly serving a 29- to 58-year sentence for kidnapping a woman in Union County, robbing her and leaving her tied up in her basement.
