A prominent blogger who closely follows the Catholic church is speculating that Erie's bishop could be heading to Buffalo.

Rocco Palmo, who runs the blog, Whispers in the Loggia, has been an analyst for many major news organizations.

Today he wrote that Erie Catholic Bishop Lawrence Persico and a bishop from Georgia are potential choices as the new Bishop of Buffalo.

Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone resigned today after a lengthy controversy over his handling of clergy sex abuse cases.

The Bishop of Albany has been named as Malone's temporary replacement.

A spokeswoman for the Erie Catholic Diocese says it is "pure speculation" that Persico would be considered to lead the Buffalo Diocese.

Pope Francis will decide on Malone's replacement.
