At least two pets were killed in a fire that destroyed a home in Vernon Township, Crawford County Sunday morning.

It was reported in the 11300 block of Pennsylvania Ave. around 11 a.m.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen area of the home, which is considered a total loss.

Smoke continued to stream from the home even after the flames were knocked down.

Meadville city firefighters were first on the scene.  They had help battling the fire from Vernon Central, Vernon Township, West Mead, Hayfield, Saegertown and Conneaut Lake firefighters.

Several dogs and cats lived inside the home. At least two of them were killed in the fire while some were rescued and cared for at a neighbor’s home.

Everyone else was able to safely get out of the home.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.
