Mercyhurst University has been notified a student at home in eastern New York on a 14-day quarantine tested positive for COVID-19, according to a message sent to the university community Tuesday.

The student returned to the Erie campus after personal travel abroad over spring break.

At the time of the student's return, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) did not classify any of the countries visited by the student as Level 3, and quarantine was not indicated. Following a CDC announcement March 10, some countries where the student traveled to were reclassified as Level 3. The student was ordered to return home to New York for quarantine, per CDC guidance.

Mercyhurst did not disclose the name of the countries visited by the student.

The student did not attend any classes or visit any dining facility on campus following spring break, according to the university. The student's meal plan activity did not show any records for any campus dining venues during that time.

The positive test for COVID-19 was reported to Mercyhurst officials around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday. They then notified the Erie County Department of Health to begin the process of notifying students who had close contact with the affected student.

Students with close contact will be asked to start a 14-day period of quarantine and monitor for symptoms, per CDC protocol.

Mercyhurst is reminding members of the university to practice personal prevention habits, including good hygiene and social distancing.
