How to file for unemployment benefits

Millions of Americans are filing for unemployment because of stay-at-home orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.
For many workers, this is a new process. There are steps to take which will help avoid scams and file quickly and efficiently.
When filing, be prepared to provide some personal information:
- SSN
- Home address and mailing address (if different)
- Telephone number
- Valid email
You may also want to provide bank information (optional) - bank name, address, account and routing number for direct deposit.
Be sure to click on official government web sites below to avoid fraudulent sites. You should never be asked to pay fees or to provide credit information.
