Littering of Masks, Gloves a Growing Concern in Erie
Improper disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE) is becoming a growing problem across Erie County.
City of Erie officials are reporting an increase in calls and emails from residents regarding improperly discarded PPE. They say too many residents are simply throwing masks and gloves on the ground when they are done using them.
Officials say improper disposal of PPE is not only an unsightly litter problem, it is also a public health risk that could potentially spread the COVID-19 virus. The litter can also make its way into the city's sewer system and, ultimately, Lake Erie.
If you use disposable masks or gloves, you are asked to refrain from tossing them on the ground. Please use a nearby trash receptacle, or take the items home with you and dispose of them there.
