Kneadful Things Bakery & Cafe in Corry closed its dining room Monday afternoon after the owner said two of her employees were threatened over the weekend.

Owner Stephanie Smith opened her cafe on May 11 in defiance of Governor Tom Wolf's mandate that prohibits restaurants to offer in-house dining amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Although the opening was well received by many in the region, Smith told Erie News Now that her employees have been receiving physical threats, and in an effort to keep them safe, she will be closing the cafe's dining room.

Smith said Friday she would not back down despite threats of fines and the revocation of her operating license, claiming it was her constitutional right to offer full-service.

Customers came from miles around to show support for Smith.

"I was willing to go up against the county, go up against the rules and what I think is not fair, but I can't risk physical harm to my staff," said Smith.

She said the business will resume carry-out and delivery service only beginning Tuesday.

A rally in support of the bakery's reopening was scheduled for Wednesday. At this time, it is unknown if Monday's closing will affect the rally.
