It's something you do everyday, breathing, that can help your overall well being. A six week breathing program brought to Girard High School earlier in the school year by Scott Russell, a physical education teacher, says the program has helped his students.

"How you breath is important and the physiology like what actually goes on when you perform these proper breathing techniques," says Russell.

In gym class, Russell would take five minutes out of his class to do breathing exercises with his students. Before starting, he gave them a survey about how they felt before the breathing program, and then another survey after.

"We compared the pre [results] and the post results and overwhelming they felt calmer, they felt more at ease, they felt better about themselves just after a five minute breathing session," says Russell.

Girard High School is one of the first in the area to offer a program that not only helps the body but the soul. His hope? To bring this program into more spaces so the simple strategy receives recognition.

"The word is getting out, we would really love to be apart of a clinical study through the health and human performance foundation which is who we worked with through this six week program," says Russell.

Russell also says that these breathing techniques helps his students deal with social situations better, have an overall healthier self esteem and even regulate carbon dioxide levels.
