Some Union City Farmers Breaking the Norm and Voting for Biden
Traditionally, republican candidates say that farmers are on their side, but some Union City farmers tell a different story. A group of farmers from Union City gather and communicate quite often to discuss the push to vote for Biden this year. There are a lot of farmers supporting Trump in our area, but this one specific group is changing the norm.
Although Trump signs are still present in Union City, more Biden signs continue to pop up.
"I think politically there were a lot of folks out here who are lifelong democrats but just haven't heard from a democratic candidate or the democratic party for a long time," Jim Wertz, the Chairman of the Erie Democratic Party says. "It's important that everyone know that they're welcome and they still have a place inside this big tent of ours."
Daniel Gourley is one of the farmers who is helping Wertz distribute signs and talk to people. Gourley says he considers himself a democrat and will certainly be voting for Biden.
"The last four years have been real stressful years with the president that we have," Gourley says. "The agricultural policies he has are pretty relaxed and nonexistent."
In his opinion, if Trump gets reelected, local farms will dissolve, leaving only corporate farming.
There is now a satellite democratic store in downtown Union City, and Jim Wertz says him and his team have done outreach to many of the towns in our region.
"We planted our roots right here in Union City," he says.
Gourley says the store is what got people talking.
"Four years ago he (Trump) said that trade wars were easy, but it's been anything but that," he says.
He says the money people are getting from the government isn't helping him and his farm much.
"People seem to take that little check you get and it makes them happy about President Trump taking care of us and working for the farmers, but really he's slitting our throat, giving us band-aids, and saying 'vote for me,'" he says.
Sue and Vince Humes are in the group of farmers voting for Biden and they are registered republicans.
"We're going to vote for Vice President Biden this time because that's what is best for the country," Vince Humes says.
He says he is disappointed in the direction the republican party is going.
"As Dan said, we gotta get back on track before there aren't any of these farms," he says.
Gourley says he is distributing signs as quickly as he can and that people cleaned him out of signs on Monday night.
