As Coyote Population Grows, PA Game Commission Gives Tips on Protecting Your Small Animals
A rise in coyote sightings is raising concerns for people in Millcreek and other areas in Erie County.
We spoke with Millcreek homeowner Jayne May, who's puppy was snatched by a coyote a few years ago. One of her larger dogs was able to scare the coyote away and save the puppy's life. However, she's concerned again because she's seen coyotes at least once per week crossing through her property.
More coyote sightings in suburban and urban areas are less rare now than before. According to PA Game Commission information and education supervisor Jason Amory, coyote populations are growing and they're expanding in the range of land that they cover. Though, he also says that coyotes are often afraid of humans. To protect small pets, that a coyote might be more willing to attack, Amory recommends owners never leave pet food out. He also says it's a good idea to monitor your small pets in your yard.
Amory does recommend calling the Game Commission if you notice a coyote that isn't afraid of humans or is acting aggressively.
