Last week, Regal Cinemas announced that they were suspending their theaters across the states because of the pandemic and no new movies being released.

Movies theaters across the nation have been struggling with only being able to show classic films since the new releases continue to get pushed back to next year and even 2023.

The Movies at Meadville opened back up in June after being closed for a few months.

"If you want to come see a movie and have the theater to yourself and you don't like crowds come on in, most of our movies are playing with two to four people in it," says General Manager, Paul McNaulty.

He says they expected to be slow when they first reopened but, not as slow as business has been.

"We use to have about 32 employees and now we're down to about half of that now and even the half now I can hardly give them hours, that they need."

The theater is now closed on Monday's, Wednesday's, and Thursday's, "utilities are our biggest cost when running a movie theater and the electricity and the heat to cool it," says McNaulty. "I have to pay the same amount if one person comes, or a thousand people come in, so unfortunately we save money by being closed those days, we lose less money by being closed those days."

McNaulty tells Erie News Now they don't know how much longer they can keep their doors open.

"Everyday it seems like how much more depressed can you be about the news, where the studios are canceling film and with everything going on, it's very frustrating, very depressing," says McNaulty. "We are trying to do what we can to survive but it's very difficult at this point."

The Movies at Meadville are hopeful more people will come out and join them soon but, they say if you don't feel comfortable coming to the theater just yet, you can still come buy popcorn to enjoy at home and still help them keep their doors open.
