Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Set to Begin April 3 in 814 Area Code
The Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC) on Monday reminded residents and businesses in the current 814 area code that mandatory 10-digit dialing for all telephone calls begins Saturday, April 3.
The state's utility agency is reminding everyone to make sure their saved phone numbers are ready for the switch.
That includes your cell phone contacts, medical alert systems, alarms, or any other systems that automatically make calls.
The 814 area code was established in 1947 as one of the state's original area codes, and they're running out of numbers to assign.
As of April 3, anyone trying to make a call in the 814 area code using only seven digits will receive a recorded message telling them to hang up and redial using the full 10-digit number, according to PUC officials.
The new 582 area code will be placed into service on May 1, 2021.
