Amtrak proposes additional Erie stop under Biden's infrastructure plan
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Amtrak could be expanding its service in Erie, the rail agency confirms to Erie News Now Wednesday.
The additional stop is a part of President Joe Biden’s proposed American Jobs Plan, the $2 trillion infrastructure package unveiled last week.
Erie would be included in a new daytime train running from New York City to Cleveland. Connections in Cleveland would then take riders to Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Detroit, according to an Amtrak spokesperson.
Biden has designated $80 billion for rail expansion in his proposal.
“Amtrak must rebuild and improve the Northeast Corridor and our National Network and expand our service to more of America,” said Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn in a statement last week after the Jobs Plan was announced. “The NEC’s many major tunnels and bridges – most of which are over a century old – must be replaced and upgraded to avoid devastating consequences for our transportation network and the country.”
Amtrak currently runs through Erie on the line connecting Chicago to New York City and Boston.
