Special Olympians Return to Falconer, N.Y.
For the first time in more than a year, Special Olympians in western New York were able to test their skills.
The event took was held Friday afternoon at Falconer Central School.
The county-wide program was called off because of the pandemic; however, individual schools like Falconer were able to hold their own individual celebrations.
16 student-athletes took part in a variety of Olympic-style events ranging from sporting events to carnival games.
Organizers say the best part of putting on these events is celebrating accomplishments, regardless of ability.
"It is the little accomplishments that are really huge," said Julie Widen, director of special education at the Falconer School District. "Today, a lot of our students have been working on riding a bike, something many may take for granted."
In all, 16 student-athletes participated in Friday's events and celebration.
