One of the biggest races in Crawford County this primary Election Day is for Meadville mayor.

A total of two Democrats are going after the top elected position in Meadville.

No Republicans are seeking election.

The race is offering two candidates with very different backgrounds.

In downtown Meadville, longtime residents like Bev Fieg are paying close attention to the primary election.

"I would like to see more progress in downtown business and see what they can do," said Fieg.

Two Democrats are hoping to lead the city into the future.

Incumbent LeRoy Stearns is seeking a second full term as mayor.

"I care very much about the City of Meadville," says Stearns.

He's been in city government for 24 years and has served on Meadville City Council since 1997.

Stearns says it is that experience that makes him the most qualified candidate for mayor.

"Experience does make a difference," said Stearns. "If you're starting a new job and you're starting a new project, you'll always try to get experience to help you with that. So, I think I'm the best qualified candidate for mayor."

He's being challenged by political newcomer Jaime Kinder.

She is the co-owner of Evolution Printing Services.

Kinder says she decided to run for office after city council voted down a pandemic task force last year to address the needs of business owners.

"For me, that hit really close to home," said Kinder. "I'm a single mother of three. I live here. I own a business here and felt very forgotten - like they didn't care."

As for top priorities, Stearns vows to balance the budget while ensuring public safety. Kinder plans to take a participatory approach towards addressing Meadville's issues.

"Having that interaction makes people feel important and makes residents know that they are represented, too," said Kinder. "I want to make sure Meadville is an inviting place."

But it will be up to voters to determine which candidate will lead Meadville for the next four years.
