Fifteen Erie area kids received specially adapted bikes and strollers Tuesday, thanks to a non-profit that helps kids with special needs.

Variety presented 12 special bikes and three strollers to help the kids become more mobile and spend time with other kids their age.

Among those receiving a bike was Johnny Heubel, the former McDowell football player who had a traumatic brain injury during a game.

His parents said they are thrilled by the generosity. Heubel will be able to move a little bit on his own and have a new way to work muscles in legs.

"This gives him the opportunity to ride a bike - figuratively and literally - because he's able to gearing to what's there memory-wise," said Brandon Beasley, Heubel's stepfather. "It's going to help him physically and mentally."

Tuesday's donation cost more than $25,000. Variety officials said they have given out more than 1,000 pieces of equipment in the last 15 months.
