The CDC's ban on evictions is set to expire on June 30.

For renters struggling to pay rent, there is financial help available.

The Emergency Rental Assistance Program protects anyone who was financially harmed by the pandemic.

The money is used to cover the costs of both rent and utilities for those in need.

According to Erie County Care Management, a total of 1,600 people in Erie County have applied for the emergency funding.

Erie County Care Management CEO Charlie Barber says they receive 40 applications a day, and those who qualify receive an average payment of $5,000.

"There's a lot of individuals who have been harmed financially because of COVID,” said Barber. “We hope that they apply and ask for help, and we hope that landlords follow suit."

As it stands right now, Pennsylvania does not have its own ban on evictions, so struggling renters have relied on the CDC’s national ban.

However, that could end at the end of the month.

Barber encourages anyone falling behind on payments, to apply.

"If there is a moratorium lift in June, we would also ask that landlords take into consideration the fact that there is this program and they should begin the application,” said Barber. “They should talk to their tenants about beginning the application and we'll get them paid as quickly as possible."

The funds are available until September of 2022.
