Erie Housing Authority Prepares for Expiration of Eviction Moratorium
In just 12 days, the CDC's eviction moratorium is set to expire. As the potential deadline approaches, Erie News Now is continuing to follow how local agencies are preparing for that potential lift.
The Erie Housing Authority provides low-income housing to nearly 3,200 families in our community.
The authority has partnered with the county to help provide residents with additional funds through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
The money is used to cover the costs of both rent and utilities for those who are struggling.
According to the City of Erie Housing Authority Executive Director Michael Fraley, a total of 78 housing authority residents have applied for those funds, with 44 being approved.
"I would say because of the rental assistance program, the impact is certainly going to be much less," said Fraley. "Number two, it is our goal to work with our residents to make sure they don't get evicted. Unfortunately, there's going to come a time when we may have to evict one or two, but I don't think it's going to be a major impact for us because we've been working with our residents ongoing with it."
Fraley says public housing is currently at 98 percent occupancy, which is historically very high.
