The Erie County DUI Task Force will set up a DUI sobriety checkpoint and use roving DUI enforcement this weekend, according to a news release from the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

The enforcement will happen between Friday, June 25, and Sunday, June 27.

The location of DUI checkpoints is picked based on crash statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Pennsylvania has seen an increase in drug-impaired driving crashes in recent years, the news release said. Some people who take prescription drugs could be impaired enough to get arrested for DUI. Marijuana also impairs drivers, especially when combined with alcohol and other drugs.

It said the initiative is meant to discourage impaired driving, not to increase arrests. DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols have lowered the number of people killed and injured in alcohol or drug impaired crashes, the District Attorney's Office said.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by Erie County and a highway safety grant from PennDOT.

Additional checkpoints are planned throughout Erie County during 2021 and 2022. Drivers will see special DUI campaigns around Halloween, Super Bowl Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving Eve and at local events associated with DUI problems.
